Building a Dam

Today I made a dam. A dam is something that beavers usually make for protection from predators.

For this activity I have made my own dam. My older sister helped me build it.

As I was making this, my uncle and dad gave me ideas of how to create and design the dam.

For the dam I used grass, rocks, water and branches from a tree.

First I dug a big hole in the ground with a shovel and that was the base.

Second I covered the hole with rocks so that when I tip the water inside the hole doesn't devolve into the mud.

Thirdly I made the dam which was the part in the middle, I just stuffed the branches and grass together and then put it all in the middle.

Lastly I tipped water from a bucket onto both sides of the dam until it was full and that was how I made the dam.

I really enjoyed this activity because I got help and because I kept thinking of good ideas as I was making the dam.

Benjamin here again. Happy New Year!

Your dam sounds awesome! It’s cool that you had space to do some digging and were able to experiment with the land and those materials.
Did you get a chance to take any photos? I’d love to see the process or the final product.

Your comment, ‘I kept thinking of good ideas as I was making the dam’ really stood out to me. This is what I was explaining to some of the other students. It’s great doing these sorts of things on paper or on the computer but there is a certain type of experience that is only available from doing it for real. That way we’re able to experiment with our designs and ideas and learn from our mistakes along the way.

    Great work Aisea!!!

  2. Hi Aisea

Great posting and construction of the dam. I'd liked to have seen a picture of this.

Getting ideas from family members is a great way of learning and often fun to have others involved.

    Great work on the SLJ.
